Dragon’s blood

Sangre de grado – Croton Lechleri

What’s Dragon’s blood?

The dragon’s blood or sangre de grado is a latex extracted from the dragon tree and owes its name to its amazing bright red color.

It was once used by the ancient peoples of the Amazon as a remedy.

Today, dragon’s blood is recognized for its many qualities, including faster healing and it can cure hemorrhoids.

The origins of the Sangre de drago

The Sangre de drago, or dragon’s blood, is a resin derived from the sap of the tree called dragon tree. This flowering tree actually covers several different species (such as Dracaena cinnabari or Croton lechleri) found in Africa, especially in Yemen, as well as in South America, especially in the Amazon. The dragon tree inhabits the main Amazon forests between Mexico, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil. It produces a blood red sap. Its name dragon blood comes from its astonishing bright red colour.

This fascinating tree that looks like a large parasol has an exceptional longevity. Its leaves are heart-shaped. It can grow up to 25 metres high. These characteristics have made it the focus of many legends. It was attributed magical properties.

The sap of the dragon tree, which is called Sangre de drago, is produced in reaction to an injury, a disease or an attack (insect, fungus etc.): it aims to control and stop the spread of this injury or any disease.
The use of Sangre de drago sap dates back to ancient times. It was used by the Greeks and Romans as a dye, but also as a remedy for many ailments. Several ancient authors relate its use in the care of wounds.

Gradually, its use spread to Europe but also found its place in Arabic and Chinese medicine. In history, its name comes back quite regularly and follows the path of the great maritime explorations. Sometimes used to embalm the dead, sometimes used to treat tooth problems, dragon blood and its astonishing properties have fascinated many pharmacologists and researchers in history. It was P. Bernabé Cobo, a Spanish naturalist and explorer who first, in the 16th century, analysed and listed the curative power of this very special sap.

In Latin America, dragon blood is used both internally and externally, especially for its healing properties. It is often described as a “liquid dressing” because it heals wounds, burns, insect bites, itching and chapping.

The medicinal properties of the sangre de drago

If the Dragon’s blood has been part of many shamanic and traditional remedies from Africa and Latin America for thousands of years, several scientific studies now support its incredible properties.

Its astonishing healing effects would be due to a polyphenol of the alkaloid family, taspine. This compound is a powerful dermal regenerator. Sangre de grado sap possesses many other polyphenols of the tannin family, such as pro-anthocyanidins or flavonols. These give it a strong antioxidant power, allowing it to fight effectively against oxidative stress and the signs of aging. It also helps to regenerate damaged skin and rehydrate dry skin.
Dragon blood also contains proanthocyanidins (antioxidants), simple phenols, diterpenes, and phytosterols.
Other substances are also identified: steroids, coumarins, tannins (54%), saponins (in low concentrations), anthocyanins, phenolic compounds (gallic acid); it also contains vitamins A, E and C.

Its properties are therefore:
– Antioxidant and protective
– Healing and repairing
– Dermal Regenerating
-Anti-aging and firming

The sangre de drago has been the subject of two patents filed by the United States, which recognize its therapeutic functions, particularly in the treatment of wounds and for its antiviral action.

Drago blood as an anti-ageing treatment

Dragon’s Blood Resin is an effective regenerator to fight against the signs of aging (wrinkles, fine lines, loss of firmness) and help the skin to strengthen itself against external aggressions. Thanks to its richness in proanthocyanidic polyphenols, Dragon’s Blood helps you to prevent premature ageing of the skin due to radical stress caused by sun exposure, pollution, tobacco and alcohol consumption and stress. Thanks to its richness in bioactive compounds, including taspine, Dragon Blood stimulates fibroblasts. It boosts the metabolism and thus stimulates its tonicity.

A study on the sangre de drago also demonstrates the increase in the synthesis of essential constituents in the maintenance of skin structure (such as collagen and fibronectin). This improves the appearance of the skin. Mature skin regains tone and firmness.

Useful in skin care, Sangre de grado also helps to reduce scars and stretch marks thanks to its deep regenerating action.

You can therefore find and add dragon’s blood extract in several cosmetic treatments:
– In your daily facial care: as a preventive and curative anti-ageing agent allowing a restructuring of the skin and a good hydration.
– In your specific care: to treat skin damaged by sun exposure, pollution, oxidative stress.
– In the care of mature skin.
– In your daily body care: for its repairing effect.
– In your specific body care: to treat stretch marks and scars.
– In post-depilation care: to allow better healing and soothe irritations.
– In your cleansing waters: to soothe irritations.

The healing powers of the Dragon’s blood

Dragon’s blood has long been used by the natives on open wounds to promote healing. It helps to heal but also protects the wounds from possible infection. The dried sap deposited on the wounds forms a protective barrier.

For many centuries, its resin was used to treat even the deepest wounds. Simply apply the latex to the affected area and as it dries, it forms a film (like a second skin) that stops bleeding and helps to speed up healing while preventing infections from occurring.

Dragon blood would allow wounds to heal four times faster! These properties are nowadays very well studied and are the subject of numerous documentations. Two compounds are at the origin of these healing virtues: crofelemer and taspine.

The application of the Blood of drago stimulates the contraction of the wound, improves the regeneration of the skin, accelerates the formation of a crust.
Numerous scientific studies have been conducted on Dragon’s Blood since the late 1980s. A study dated 1993 revealed that the application of Sangre de drago sap to a skin wound results in approximately four times faster healing than other commercially available healing products.

Dragon’s blood against hemorrhoids

Still little known in Europe, the blood of the Dragon has been one of the main remedies of the traditional Amazonian pharmacopoeia for thousands of years. In addition to its healing power, it also acts radically against haemorrhoids. It is used externally by the indigenous tribes of Peru against this disorder.

Haemorrhoids are begenin conditions related to abnormal dilation of the veins in the anus and rectum. This pathology, although begnine in most cases, remains, nevertheless, painful and embarrassing: sharp pain, itching, hemorrhage at the time of bowel movements etc..

Dragon’s blood acts against hemorrhoids and can help to relieve you in less than three weeks.
You can use it internally at the rate of 5 to 10 drops morning, noon and evening, twenty minutes before the meal, diluted in a glass of water.

In addition to acting on hemorrhoids and diarrhea by relieving pain and treating them, it will help prevent new attacks from occurring. It is also effective on other gastric problems such as gastrointestinal ulcers and colic. It is a component of many pharmaceutical products, some of which are even patented.
